Pena Palace at a glance

The Pena Palace stands on a hill above Sintra, inside a large park. It is run by the Parques de Sintra operator, which sells the tickets online and at the entrance. Visits to the palace are only possible with a booked date and time.

Prices quoted in older guides and on reseller sites, for example €14, €15 or €10, are outdated or wrong. The figures below are the adult rates for 2026 from the park operator.

How the time slot works

Entry to the palace needs a date and a time. The time printed on your ticket applies to the palace, not to the park entrance. If you arrive before your slot, you wait. If you arrive after it, you are not admitted and not refunded.

Allow about 30 minutes from the park entrance to the palace. The way leads up the slope on foot, or you take the small shuttle if you booked it in advance. Tickets bought online can be rebooked for up to one year.

The park operator says the afternoon is currently less busy, so an afternoon slot combined with a morning in the park works well.

Opening hours and works

Hours as published for autumn 2026. Check the operator before you go.

Park

Open 9:00 am to 7:00 pm. Last entry is 6:00 pm.

Palace

Works

Work on the window frames in the cloister and the chalet façade ran until October 2026. In the park, work after storm Martinho in March 2025 continues without an end date, for example at the Fern House and the Pena Farm greenhouses.

Which ticket should you buy?

For a first visit, the Essential Visit is enough. It covers the New Wing, the terraces and the park, and it costs less than half of the Full Tour. Take the Full Tour only if you want to see every accessible room and are happy to join a group of up to 20 with a visitor assistant.

Families of four save money with the €65 family ticket compared with four single tickets. Check the age bands: youth tickets apply from 6 to 17, seniors from 65, and children under 6 are free on the Essential Visit.

If you only want to walk in the grounds, the €12 park ticket is the cheapest option. The shuttle between the park entrance and the palace is a separate €4.50 return charge, and you buy it in advance. Without it, plan on a walk uphill of about 30 minutes.

Because the slot is fixed, book it before you choose your train. If your plans change, online tickets can be rebooked for up to a year.

Getting to Pena

Take the train from Rossio to Sintra, about 40 minutes. Private cars may not use the roads to Pena. From Sintra station, take bus 434, the Pena circuit, which runs roughly every 10 minutes from about 8:50 am. A 24-hour ticket for buses 434 and 435 costs €13.50. The last departure from Pena is at 7:08 pm.

The Lisboa Card is not valid on these buses. At the palace it only gives a discount that you pay at the ticket office, and online booking with the card is not possible. Read the full route in our Sintra day trip guide.

Other sights nearby cost €12 each for the Moorish Castle and Monserrate, and €20 for Quinta da Regaleira.
