Lisbon tours: five types compared
Most Lisbon tours fall into five groups: a walking tour of the old town, a tuk-tuk ride over the hills, a boat trip on the Tagus, a day tour to Sintra and an evening of fado. This page does not list tour operators or tour prices. It helps you decide which type fits your trip and what to look for in the description.
Two things in Lisbon make the choice easier. The city is built on hills, and since September 2025 the historic funiculars and the Santa Justa lift are closed, so getting uphill takes effort. And several of the biggest sights, such as Pena Palace in Sintra, sell tickets for fixed time slots, so a tour that handles the timing can save a lot of planning.

Lisbon tours compared
What each type is good for and what to check.
| Type | Best for | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Walking tour | First day in the city, Alfama and the old town, history and stories | Meeting point, group size, language, how many hills and steps |
| Tuk-tuk tour | Visitors who want the hills without the climb, small groups and families | Number of stops, duration, how many passengers, whether the route reaches the viewpoints |
| Boat tour on the Tagus | Seeing the Belém Tower and the 25 de Abril Bridge from the water | Departure point, duration, commentary, weather policy |
| Sintra day tour without tickets | Visitors who want transport and a guide but choose their own palaces | Which stops, how long in Sintra, whether you must buy the Pena time slot yourself |
| Sintra day tour with tickets | Visitors who want one booking for transport and entry | Which palaces are included, the Pena time slot, group size, return time |
| Fado evening | An evening of live fado in Alfama or the old town | Dinner included or not, minimum spend, seating, start time |
A simple rule: choose a walking or tuk-tuk tour for your first morning, a boat trip when the weather is clear, and a Sintra day tour if you want to avoid the planning. Add a fado evening on a night you do not need to get up early.

What to check in each tour type
Descriptions differ. These points decide whether a tour is good value.
Walking tours
Good for context in Alfama and the Baixa, where the streets are narrow and the history is hard to read alone. Note that the castle ticket costs €17 (2026) and is normally not part of a street walk, so check whether any entry is included.
Alfama guide →Tuk-tuk tours
Useful on a hot day or with children, because the hills are steep. The route usually stays on streets a small vehicle can use, so ask which viewpoints it includes. A tuk-tuk does not replace tram 28 if you want that experience.
Tram 28 guide →Boat tours
The Tagus gives a view of the waterfront that you do not get from land. Look for the departure point and the duration, and read the cancellation rule for bad weather.
Sintra day tours
Private cars cannot use the access roads to Pena and the Moorish Castle, so a tour solves the transport. Without a tour, the train from Rossio takes about 40 minutes and buses 434 and 435 cost €13.50 for 24 hours. Check what the tour includes against these costs.
Sintra day trip →Tickets for Sintra
The Pena Palace Essential ticket costs €20 and comes with a fixed palace time slot. Late arrivals are not admitted and not refunded. The Moorish Castle and Monserrate cost €12 each, Quinta da Regaleira €20. If a tour includes tickets, check which ones and the time slot.
Pena Palace →Fado evenings
Venues and prices change, so we do not name them. If you want a first impression in daytime, the Museu do Fado in Alfama costs €5 (2026) and is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00.
Tour or on your own?
The honest trade-offs.
Pros of a tour
One booking, a guide to answer questions, no timetable to read. A tour helps most for Sintra, where transport, time slots and several ticket offices need planning.
Cons of a tour
The route and the time are fixed. You may spend longer at some stops than you want, and tickets for sights you like may not be part of the price.
Pros of going alone
You choose the pace. A 24-hour public transport ticket costs €7.25, or €11.40 with the suburban trains to Sintra and Cascais. Compare this with the tour price for the same day.
Cons of going alone
You read the timetables and book the slots yourself. For Belém, the Lisboa Card needs a pre-booked slot for the monastery and the tower.

Lisbon tours: frequently asked questions
Which Lisbon tour is best for a first visit?
A walking tour of Alfama and the old town gives the best overview. Add a Sintra day trip if you have a third day.
Are entry tickets included in a Sintra tour?
It depends on the tour. Read the description and look for the Pena Palace time slot and any other palace. Without tickets, you pay at the sight, for example €20 for Pena Essential in 2026.
Can I use the Lisboa Card on a tour?
The official shop lists 10 to 50 percent off tours and services with the card. Ask the operator whether a specific tour takes part.
Is a tuk-tuk tour worth it?
It is worth it if the hills are the problem, for example in summer or with children. It does not replace a guide who explains the history of a district.
Where can I hear fado?
In Alfama and the old town. Venues and prices change, so check the details of any evening before you book. The Museu do Fado is open Tuesday to Sunday.
