Belém Tower at a glance

The Torre de Belém is the best-known landmark on the river west of the city centre. Together with the Jerónimos Monastery it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. It is run by Museus e Monumentos de Portugal, the same body that looks after the monastery.

For tickets, opening hours and everything else in Belém in more detail, see our separate Belém Tower guide.

Entry became more expensive on 1 January 2025. Guides that still quote €8 are out of date. In 2026 an adult ticket costs €15. This page is independent and not an official site; the official tourism portal is visitlisboa.com.

The closing day of 13 June is the city holiday of Santo António. If you travel in June, check the date before you plan Belém. We could not verify discounts for the tower itself, so look at the ticket platform for reductions and proof requirements.

Monday is the main trap. The tower and the monastery are both closed, so Monday is a poor day for Belém. Use it for the city centre and plan Belém for another day.

Lisboa Card: the time slot is the catch

With the Lisboa Card the tower is free. The card does not let you simply walk in, though. You need a time slot, and you book it with the number of your Lisboa Card. That number only exists once you have swapped your voucher for the physical card at a tourist desk in the city.

This means you cannot reserve a slot from home before you arrive. Access for card holders also depends on the daily quota, so a slot is not guaranteed. If you want the tower on a specific day, pick up your card early and book the slot straight away.

Whether the card pays off depends on what else you visit. Read the Lisboa Card guide for prices and a worked example.

Getting to Belém

The district lies a few kilometres west of the centre, along the river.

Tram 15E

The tram runs from the city to Belém. A ride with a topped-up Navegante card costs €1.72, and on board a tram ticket costs €3.30 (2026).

Lisboa Card

The card includes public transport, so the ride to Belém costs nothing extra. See what is included.

What else to see around Belém Tower

Most sights lie within a short walk, so a half day is realistic.

The Padrão dos Descobrimentos costs €10 for the viewing platform, the exhibition and the film, or €5 for the exhibition alone. It is open 10:00 to 18:00 from October to February (last entry 17:30) and 10:00 to 19:00 from March to September (last entry 18:30). It is closed on 1 January, 1 May, 24 December, 25 December and 31 December. Lisboa Card holders enter free.

MAAT, the museum of art, architecture and technology, charges non-residents €16 in 2026. The museum lists Tuesday as its weekly closing day and opens from 10:00 to 19:00 on the other days; it is also closed on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December. The Padrão is not closed on Mondays, so it is the safer Belém stop on that day.

A simple plan for a Belém day

Tuesday to Sunday works best.

Morning

Start at the tower when it opens at 9:30, with your slot booked. Walk along the river to the Padrão.

Midday

Visit the Jerónimos Monastery. Remember the cloister closes its ticket desk at 16:30, so do not leave it for the end of the day.

Afternoon

Add MAAT if you like contemporary art, or the Padrão platform for a view over the river. Return by tram or train.

The Pastéis de Belém bakery is close to the monastery. Check its opening times and prices locally.
